Expedition around Greenland

Expedition on Maria S. Merian – MSM 139

The Expedition started on the 25th of June from Reykjavik in the direction of Greenland. The 18 Scientists sampled 33 Stations along the West Coast of Greenland and traveled 4575 nautical miles.

To assess the plankton communities around Greenland, they sampled 17.000 Liter of water and isolated 550 plankton organisms. The water was also used for experiments on the ship to assess responses to warming conditions and competition. The 82 sediment samples taken will allow the team to go back in time and assess past plankton communities.

On two stops along the way in Aasiaat and Nuuk were used to invite the look schools on board and show case modern day marine science at sea.
